A lot of people think that when becoming a minimalist, you have to declutter. While a part of that is true, it is also false.
Decluttering is an action of what you are doing, but Minimalism is a lifestyle.
When becoming a minimalist, I went through all of my items of what I feel like gave my space purpose and got rid of the things that did not show purpose in my life anymore.
I got rid of items like clothes, books, pictures, different decoration items and many more items that I felt like I did not need. Sometimes I still feel that I am not the perfect minimalist because when I try to get rid of one item, I tend to find something else to replace that item that will serve me better use. I AM LITERALLY DOING MINIMALISM WRONG. To be honest there is no right or wrong way to be a minimalist.
Lately, I have been withdrawn from shopping. That is my hardest breakaway. I tend to window surf online shops, then end up buying something, then canceling it. I don't know why, but it has been hard not wanting to buy stuff for myself then when I do, I feel guilty and return it.
Sometimes, I feel as though I need to take my own advice to think about if I need it and how will it benefit me in life.
Usually decluttering is the first step in becoming a minimalist, but it is not something you are supposed to do in your whole minimalist journey. Being a minimalist has changed me to view things that help benefit and add value to my life. When starting to declutter, think about the things that don't value your life and get rid of them. Think of the what and why of that item or thing.
Once that is done, be done.
Don't keep buying things and getting rid of other things to replace that item. Only buy what you need!
Once you stop decluttering, then begins your journey as a minimalist and your life will be calmer and simpler.
