According to the Merrian-Webster Dictionary, Minimalism is defined as “A style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.”
Simplicity is the main word for me. Simplicity.
What minimalism means to me is living a life of simplicity.
I started my journey as a minimalist a few months ago. Many times I have failed, but with the proper support and resources, you can make anything possible!
My first time trying to be a minimalist was in college and boy was that hard! I never really had time to just sit down and understand what minimalism was. I just jumped in assuming I knew, but I was wrong and that is why I failed.
This pandemic we are all experiencing is helping me understand the true meaning of life and how simple it can really be. I am the most cluttered-filled person you will meet. Not like an object clutter but like LIFE clutter. I pack so much in my days that I can never do just one thing at a time. I feel like I am always running and that I have to get things done at certain times. Whether that is just personal or work-related, it’s stressful. Once you bring stress into your life, your environment can look somewhat the same, which is why I turned to minimalism to try to simplify my life and the space around me.
One main point that I want to share with you is that Everyone’s Minimalist journey is different.
My minimalist journey could look different from someone that lives with less or more things than I do. It can look different than a family of six. Every minimalist lives differently.
What I have learned through my journey of minimalism is that it’s not just about decluttering your stuff like personal belongings, but it’s also about decluttering your life and making life much simpler.
Yes, our first instinct is to just go through our rooms and get rid of things we don’t need. This is a great start to minimalism and this was my start. As I got rid of different items, it was hard. Some of the items I had, I felt attached to, but once I starting doing more research into what minimalism is and watching The Minimalist documentary on Netflix Less is now, it hit me to understand that when we leave this earth, we leave with none of our earthly objects.
Through life, I have collected different objects like books. I always wanted to have a library in my future home. A lot of the books that I owned were books I may have only read once or never at all and knew that I would never get to them. So I took the liberty to go through 50-60 books on my bookshelf and now only have about 20. That might not seem like a start, but it was to me. There could be more on that bookshelf that I could get rid of, but some things take time. There are always alternatives that I can use including using my kindle to buy or rent the books I really want and know I will read or check them out at the library. The library can save money and the kindle can save space.
Throughout this blog, I want to show the readers my journey through my minimalist life and the tips that I learn along the way. Each time I post, I will have a main point for each blog post. If you don’t remember (or understand) anything that I post, I hope that you will be able to remember the main point I want to share with my readers.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and cannot wait to share my journey with you.
